Father of Polypathy and great cardiologist Dr Shreenivas dies at 91

Noted cardiologist Dr S Shreenivas died in the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday (09- 11- 2010/ 10- 11- 2010) in Heart Hospital, Kankarbagh, Patna, Bihar. He was 91 and was in the hospital for about a month. He left behind his wife Kishori Sinha, two sons and a daughter.

Being close to my inlaws, being a doctor's family, we used get inspired by him. We had one chance to see him in 2007. I cant imagine people of his stature in Bihar at least in near future. Not in vision at present at least! The rational thought, the clear vision . . . . In addition to professional excellence!
His last rites was performed at Manikarnika Ghat in Benaras on Tuesday.
Dr Shreenivas was sent to the United States in 1948 to study cardiology on the recommendation of Dr S M Ghoushal.
There he studied in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and also got an opportunity to take training from Dr Paul Dudle White, a world famous Cardiologist and Professor at Harvard University. The only other trainee Cardiologist from India, who had worked with Dr White at that time, was Dr Padmawati. He also studied under Dr Frank N Wilson, Father of modern Electro-Cardiography.
In 1952 he returned to India and set up Hospital for Cardio-vascular diseases. In 1971 he became the founder-director of Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology and served on that post till 1976. He brought with him the first Cardiology (ECG) machine to India.
Born at Garsisai village, near Dalsinghsarai in samastipur his mother was from Birsinghpur village in Samastipur from a family of landlord. He got his degree from Prince of Wales Medical College Hospital now called Patna Medical College and Hospital and for further study went to England, US and Sweden.
In 1977 he along with Dr B Bhattacharya, noted Homeopath and some Ayurveds initiated the concept of Polypathy having under one roof all the modalities of treatment be it Allopathy, Homeopathy, Unani, Ayurved, Yoga, Tibbi, Naturopathy, Acupuncture etc. There are 151 ways of treatment which come under Polypathy. In 1997 he organized a Polypathy Conference. Later it was held in Kathmandu, Madrid and Milan.
Prominent doctors of Patna such as Dr S N Mishra, Dr U C Samal, Dr Sanjeev Kumar, Dr Gopal Prasad Singh, Dr Basant Singh, Dr Shahjanand, Dr Vijay Prakash etc condoled his death. A condolence meeting was held in the Zakir Husain Institute, Patna on Tuesday.
He left behind two sons and a daughter. He named his eldest son as Bhairav Usman Priyadarshi. He was named so after Brigadier Usman, who laid down his life in the 1948 Indo-Pak War. The second son was named (Dr) Tandaw Einstein Samdarshi––obviously after the renowned scientist––and daughter Yashodhara Thakur.
. . . And probably, in this era of religious fundamentalism (banskruptcy rather), castism and regionalism, his and his son's name are misfit, thats why they were not making rounds and rounds in the socio- political sphere! According to one of close relatives - "buddha jhakki thaa"!

He also adopted a Dalit girl, which reflected the true side of his personality.

How many us can do it even today? Or is there any so callet dalit to note it around.

His multi-faceted personality can be gauged from the fact that in 1993 he represented India in Chicago at the Second World Conference of Parliament of Religions. The first such conference was addressed by Swami Vivekanand exactly a century ago.

The sadest part is, inspite of good start, Bihar could never capituale on the great beginnings. Some one who came 30 years later is now the owner of the laregst corporate hospital not only in this country, in Asia!

I bow my head in his memory and pray god to give peace to his soul.
