Confused between the two sides of the grinder: Where to go?

Recently we have come across clear picture (don’t know whether it’s clear to all, I will try to make it clear) of different organizations of the Indian government out in public with contradictory visions. Worse than the vision, its painful and confusing for the common person that they are out in open in favor of or against particular persons/ groups. Media keeps reporting on both the sides and people have to make correction in their ideas on daily/ hourly basis! It becomes more sensitive and grave when it is concerned about people lives . . . whether its zail or encounter deaths. As a common man we don’t know whether it’s healthy for the country/ society, but we know for sure that things are not going on smoothly and all is not well! We are living in a dangerous situation where our drivers/ captains are fighting over the direction of the sailing!
Let’s see the two recent and serious examples of the above statement which made me to make such an opinion. As a rule we know that our judiciary is generous. Getting bail or acquitted is very easy as per Indian judiciary system. We used to mock at it few years ago and feel handicap before the corrupt and high handed people. It gave birth to two grave ways. One was rampant corruption at top level which led to billions of loss to the government exchequer. And second was a volley of police encounters to eliminate the criminals who were criminals beyond the doubt of the police; of which people say most of them are fake! That’s police use to kill the criminals not in an ambush but in usual cold situation when they had no reason to fire! Although most of the time common mass have taken a sigh of relief after elimination of such dreaded criminals, in our democratic setup with poor and non clear stand on critical issues of corruption on high places, legal and official confusion has cropped up. Recently that has been clear by the outcome of SIT report of Isharat jahan encounter (a young girl being used by the terrorist organizations as a cover). A common man is at a philosophical loss to whether to support/ rejoice the killing of a criminal or to go by the process of our judicial system. But a still bigger question remains is, if the government’s own hands are not believing/ depending/ supporting each other what about a commoner? How much he should believe the system? Is he safe? As per the reports from the court room, judges are not taking the idea of extra judiciary killings on the name of encounter even though the slain persons were declared or clear criminals!

The other example is still confusing. Recent 2G and 3G scams saw billions of government money being siphoned to few power players! The revelations came from none other than government’s own functionary – CAG. That the political masters were quite unhappy with the estimate was more than clear. But after the arrests were done, CBI (we all know the credentials of the organization – its maneuverability) not only estimated the loss lower than the CAG estimates, it brought it in open in the media and went a step ahead to not to oppose the bail please of one of culprits! And here again the judiciary did a balancing act by questioning the decision of not opposing the bail!

Seeing these two examples, what is clear is, not only there are two faces/ sides among the executives; they are running amok against each other! Is it because the government is with the wrong doer and so a weaker side is being balanced or is it because real confusion at the philosophical level and so only intellectual differences are causing the confusions, will be clear only after some time. But in the mean time, what about the lives lost? What about the days in prison? What about the sympathy waves and heated discussions on the coffee shops? What about ruined relations? What about the wasted time of the commoner?

Whatever be the future, whether the judiciary understands or not, whether SIT accepts or not, whether the police and CBI come out of politician's control or not, the common man must understand that his life is not going to remain peacefull (may not be before the bullets all the time or may not be behind the bars all the tiem) if they take the benefit of the nation lightly. Every effort by all concerned including the government institutions should be made to give this message clearly.

For the government/ establishment, they need to understand URGENTLY that there needs to be sanctity in the cases of benefits/ safety of the nation. They should make arrangement to dissociate the investigation agencies from  the political control and should make them strong so that they can play more decisive role in the decision making by the judiciaries. In the judicial system, there should be enough importance and role for the facts coming through government or nongovernment (media/ whistle blowers) agencies and not just BLINDLY following the COOKED up EYEwitnesses.

MAQBOOL FIDA HUSAIN

He first began by hand-painting Bollywood film posters and later joined the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group in the late 1940s after Indian independence from Britain. They tried to create a new art for a new country, combining Indian traditions with modern Western avant-garde styles.

He was not trained anywhere . . . he learnt on his own . . .
Famous for walking barefoot and carrying a large paintbrush like a riding crop, Husain grew from a struggling commercial painter creating cinema hoardings in the late 1930s to one of India's leading artists.
Born in 1915m he was 32 years old at the time of independence and it was his conscious decision as many to stay back in India and not to go to Pakistan.

Famous for walking barefoot he had written that he left his shoes at the cremation ground of the Hindi poet Muktibodh who had died an un-noticed man in 1964.

He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1973 and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1986. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1991.

He never maintained a studio but he spread his canvases out on the floor of whatever hotel room he happened to be staying in and paying for damages when he checked out.

The famous nude paintings were created in 1970s, but did not become an issue until 1996, when they were printed in Vichar Mimansa, a Hindi monthly magazine, which published them in an article headlined "M.F. Husain: A Painter or Butcher".

Husain's film Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities was pulled out of cinemas a day after some Muslim organisations raised objections to one of the songs in it. The All-India Ulema Council complained that the Qawwali song Noor-un-Ala-Noor was blasphemous. It argued that the song contained words directly taken from the Quran. The council was supported by Muslim organisations like the Milli Council, All-India Muslim Council, Raza Academy, Jamiat-ul-Ulema-e-Hind and Jamat-e-Islami. The film was well received by the critics, however, and went on to win various awards.

Husain left the country stating that "matters are so legally complicated that I have been advised not to return home". Krishan Khanna, one of Husain's contemporaries, stated that "It's not just Husain's but the entire artist community's lives which are at stake. Anybody and everybody can file a case against us now. Anyone can infringe upon our lives".

Satish Gujral went on record to ask Husain whether he will be bold enough to treat icons of Islam in the same manner. However Gujral says he deeply regrets the way Husain was treated and forced into an exile because of what he terms "the mob culture".

Writing in The Pioneer, Chandan Mitra wrote, "As long as such a law exists in the statutes, nobody can be faulted for approaching the courts against Hussain's objectionable paintings, nor can the judiciary be pilloried for ordering action against the artist for his persistent and deliberate refusal to appear before the court.”

In response to the controversy, Husain's admirers petitioned the government to grant Husain the Bharat Ratna, India's highest award.

On his part Husain stated that Hindu leaders have not spoken a word against his paintings, and they should have been the first ones to have raised their voice.

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray said “He only slipped up on the depiction of Hindu gods and goddesses. Otherwise, he was happy and content in his field. If his demise is a loss for modern art, then so be it. May his Allah give him peace!"

But the question is why something raked the society after 26 years of its origin?

MF Husain was a great soul. Starting his life from a modest family he struggled his way to the stardom!

Salutations to him. May Allah give peace to his soul!

Karunanidhi Versus A K Antony

Yesterday's A. K. Antony's statement about present anti-corruption movement is very realistic, very true and very enthusiastic. I am happy and proud that we have some grounded people like Mr. Antony around us. Yes, the present anti-corruption drive should aim at 100% transparency. That's the only way and a panacea against corruption. no other form of law will be ever successful.
In contrary, if you see the role of DMK patriarch Mr. M. Karunanidhi (called as KALAIGNAR - artist) has just auctioned all his credit earned all through his life. In fact if you analyze their moves retrospectively, it gives a clear indication of planned conspiracy against the nation. If you remember, they were the only one who moved out of the BJP - NDA hegemony immediately after the election results were declared. In fact 2004 elections, BJP had not fared worse than 1999 elections but its allies like Akali Dal and JDU did badly and that was the main reason for their inability to reach the magic number. Congress, not willing to ask for support from Mulayam Singh, needed DMK support. Now this party being part of the earlier government, knew the weaknesses and loopholes and was ready to jump to grab the opportunity if any. So, they wanted only few ministries - telecom, heavy industry, road transport . . . and for that they took a written promise from Pranab Mukherjee before giving the letter of support! And when they were not awarded those very ministries, the document signed by Mr. Pranab Mukherjee was shown to the media and withdrawal from the government was threaten! SO, they knew what departments were juicy and they opted for that specifically. They exploited those departments unto the hilt!
. . . And now this 85 year old man wants to preach the bad result of bad friendship! . . . wants to pull out of the government complaining that the government is conspiring against his family! . . . This all despite the fact that two of his kept were left out of the corruption charges by the corrupt CBI officials.

I strongly feel, some one should file a case and this gentleman should be tried for sedition. He had opted for the selected ministries in the central government with a plan of corruption in his mind . . . . conspiracy of corruption . . . And never forget, it was BJP - NDA government which allowed them to go ahead with the idiotic "first come first serve" rule which had favoritism in its root.

Poverty in India

Earlier or even now for most of those who are poor, poverty had been mostly accepted as their fate or inevitable; the most important reason of poverty being the insufficiency of the traditional modes of production to give an entire population a comfortable standard of living. After the industrial revolution, mass production in factories made wealth increasingly more inexpensive and accessible. Of more importance was the modernization of agriculture, such as fertilizers, in order to provide enough yields to feed the population. Also improvement in agriculture remains the core method to eliminate poverty, more so because three quarters of the world’s poor today are farmers.
The World Bank defines extreme poverty as living on less than US $1.25 per day, and moderate poverty as less than $2 a day. According to Indian Planning Commission a daily expenditure of Rs. 20 on essential requirements for those living in urban areas and Rs.15 for those in the rural India was enough to keep them out of poverty. As per planning commission allocation of expenditure to different category are, a monthly expenditure of Rs. 31 on rent and conveyance, Rs.18 on education, Rs. 25 on medicines and Rs. 36.50 on vegetables! A minimum intake of 2,400 calories daily is essential for a physically active person to sustain life. This required an expenditure of at least Rs. 44 per day (at the rate around few years ago) — excluding expenditure on shelter, clothing, education, and transportation. Another big aspect which is essential for healthy living and specially population control is entertainment which is remarkably absent!
After going through this data, If I consider the health aspect, I dont wonder the way people feel troubled when they come across the medical expenditure. If I presume that the person has only one episode of most trivial medical attention every year, he has just Rs 300. The cheapest antibiotics Co – trimoxazole costs 2.56 Rs per tab of which 14 tablets means 35.84 Rs, other supportive medications included (I wonder who uses co - trimoxazole now a days) I will be surprised if any medical bill is less than 300 Rs! If it’s a family of 5, it comes annually just 1,500 Rs annually! Even if its a single episode of diarrhea with dehydration for one out of 5 members of the family every year, its inadequate! If we take average life expectancy of 60 years and life time chance of tuberculosis as 40% at least two out of five will have tuberculosis so (as per WHO India has highest TB prevalence in the world), for five people, life time health expenditure as per our planning commission is 5 X 60 X 300 = 90, 000 Rs! So, just 45, 000 Rs per patient! Is it sufficient for treating Tuberculosis even if that’s the only ailment for whole of life of the five people (no pregnancy, no trauma and no dehydration episode - a highly imaginary and synthetic situation!).
I leave the cost of medical bill for the people to decide. But I clearly remember one of my colleagues a fourth grade employee (earning four thousand per month and he was not the only earning member of the family) coming back to me with the prescription for antibiotic as the medicine was costing him 800 Rs!
There are so many aspects of health care in our country which need attention like facilities available at the government hospitals, spurious medicines, availability of doctors, inadequate vaccination and other preventive measures, inadequacy/ failure of different disease control programmes, but when I looked at the definition of the poor by the planning commission specially the allocation of fund in a family budget for health, I was pained. The pain was so severe that if I don’t laugh to forget it, to come out of thinking, I will become inhuman!

Bony degeneration

By the age of 40 years, compressive strength of bone reduces by 50% in any sex. In females, it continues to reduce more . . . So the possibility of fracture even in non - infected and not effected by secondary tumours (spread of cancers) is very high. This reduction in strength continues to be more weak in females.

So do exercise, take calcium tablets, milk, bony pieces of the non vegetarian food . . . and avoid trauma at any cost!
