There are so many theories of origin of Bhumihars. Starting from Lord Parashuram who was a Brahmin but had fighting spirit to chanakya who was a baackroom manager of Chanadragupta and maade him the kind and later emperor even though Chandragupta could not understand that, people give so many hypothesis. The fact is that no one knows. As they are the strongest people in compaarision to the surroundings, it has become fashion to discuss about them. but most of the time people go wrong way. I think problem is that it has been very vibrant community jumping from here to there and so the usual stream of ancestors which is seen in case of other communities is not seen.
There have been few real sensible discourse about origin of Bhumihars. People like Dr. Sachchidanand Sinha and Acharya Chatursen haave left behind enough intellectual work to reckon with. Even according to them a single theory is not possible. The few which sounds interesting anad possible are as follows-
(1) They are the Brahmins who helped the administration - slowly left the vedic rituals (i mean life dependent on that).
(2) They are the Brahmins who joined Budhdhism and when came back to the folds of Hinduism, were not accepted by the Brahmins as normal Brahmin.
(3) They are the Brahmins whose kings were aarrested/ killed by different invaders and they had no option but to go for farming
I think all the three reasons are possible.
