Kashmir and India

People say Kashmir as paradise on earth. They also say it as the diamond in the Indian crown. For last 60 years it has been the flash point between India and Pakistan. So many invasions have taken place from the Pakistani side since independence. Similar number of agreements also have been done from both the sides. Except the long haul of around 17- 18 years after Shimla agreement, the reason has been regularly under trouble. After 1989 general elections, as the trouble in Punjab was almost over and a weak political group was in power in Delhi, Kashmir was painted with blood through a new style of proxy war called terrorism! Since then it is not getting controlled mainly because we don't have visionary leader anywhere in this reason at present. The present leaders are just mediocre business man type! If any one of Gandhi, Nehru or Indira type would have been alive, the death dance would have been stopped long ago!
Going to the little bit of history, this blood bath is the result of the same hatred campaign started by Britishers which resulted in separation of Pakistan. At that time few states were in confusion over their inclusion. It included Kashmir (king Hari Singh), Hyderabad (Nizam) and Junagarh (Sir Shahnawaz- father of zulfikar ali bhutto). Indian leaders tactfully (!) or by their laziness waited for the opportune time for intervention. In kashmir it was when Pakistan supported militia invaded. After invitation from the king the militia was stopped and Kashmir was integrated with Indian nation with special status which still continues. Fight to get the area under control of Pakistan army (the militia were non but undressed Pakistan army) was continued till Nehru requested UN intervention which called for peace and election by the Kashmiris to decide for their choice of nation- whether they want to be with Pakistan or with India. At that time Pakistan did not want that to happen being aware of the consequences as the people of Kashmir were annoyed with the Pakistani invasion. As his simplistic character, Nehru couldn't see the future. And the result is everlasting pain to every one concerned.
Here I must mention the role of Abdullas in Kashmir. Sheikh Abdulla who started his political carrier from struggle against feudalism under the banner of his party called muslim conference, found friend in Nehru and went ahead with changing the name of his party to National Conference and participated in Indian Independence. He was the first prime minister of the Jammu and Kashmir. After death of Nehru, he was jailed and later exiled. later in 1974 he had compromise with Indira Gandhi and became the chief minister of the state till his death. After his death his son Mr. Farooq Abdulla became the chief minister. His grand son Mr. Omar abdulla has been the foreign minister for state in the BJP led NDA government. I remember Mr. Farooq Abdulla ststing- " Kashmir is the need for secular India as it is the only example where a muslim dominated state is part of India." Recently Omar Abdulla has aired his concern about the migration of Kashmiri pandits in no uncertain terms. In my opinion, Abdullas have been clear about their roles and in present India they are one of the few really secular leaders.
At present Kashmir is one of the most unsafe places in this world. Future depends on the policy makers of India, mass of Kashmir and the leaders of the region. Altogether the paradise of this world is in uncertain depth of problems where only time will bring it out from.
