communication with a patient's son

Patient's Son- m from mumbai India
4 month back my dad had an heart attack, doc told us that was severe heart attack,
and if we want to save his life, he need to go for angiography and angioplasty. After angioplasty and angiography he was on ventilator for 15-20 days, but he is still unconscious, when we asked doc what is the reason he told us his brain tissue is dead because of heart attack!
Now he is not able to understand anything. He is now on liquid diet. For his breathing problem doc inserted one pipe in his throat through small operation. He can't speak, not able to respond,
but some time he smiles, some time tears come from his eyes,
he can move his hand and feet, doc told me this is the condition for rest of his life.
Can anyone guide me any other treatment which we can try at least my father can understand and respond to us.

hard luck

Friend, it is sad to say but ur father is in bad health and as other people have told, there is nothing much which can be done for him. Exercise and keep trying to talk to him even if he doesn't reply- he can understand - tell him the good things (human attitude- he can understand- if feels bad- can't do anything). And pray to god. In rare conditions few improvements may come till 2nd year. Rare- very rare- need luck- pray god.

Patient's Son- thanks for ur reply bur we are surprised. He went in to the hospital walking . . .how can it happen all of a sudden?

Manish (myself) -

your curiosity is valid. its because brain is such a tender organ, it can't tolerate a reduction in the blood supply by more than 50% for more than few minutes. if the cut in the blood supply is total brain will die within 3 minutes. and thats the limit of human interference. we have just that much time to act within.
Patient's Son- thank you very much sir for reply,
It helped me to understand the condition of my father,
we should hope for the best, god is great he'll help us in some way. Sir i had noticed while my father was on ventilator they gave him sleeping injection twice a day, does this cause any serious problem? One of my friend told me, too much of sleeping dose will create problem.

To keep patient on ventilator sleeping medication is essential- dosage doctors take care. More over i will tell you to imagine two different situation- you are on the back seat of a car and feel that the driver is driving badly and may land you in trouble- you may take over from the driver! But if you are traveling in a flight, even if you are a trained pilot, you can't take over the plain in other than exceptional condition. So? You enjoy the travel! In case of hospital and doctors the second condition employs. I can't treat even my father if he is not admitted in my care. Then how can you interfere? you just leave the job to those who are doing it. Trust them and pray god to show them the right path.
